After two years of consultation, a first step in the right direction: the city council says yes to the “Zürich City Card”. The Autonomous School of Zurich has supported the “Zürich City Card” project from the outset. Such an “identity card” enables all people, regardless of their residence status, to exercise their basic rights.
People “without papers”, i.e. without valid residence status, live in constant fear of being checked and consequently fined, deported or imprisoned. The “Zürich City Card” takes away this fear and gives people the opportunity to live more freely.
The “Zürich City Card” can finally put an end to the absurd police hunt for people without papers, at least by the city police.
The “Zürich City Card” gives people the opportunity to defend themselves against exploitation without fear of being arrested.
The “Zürich City Card” makes us all citizens of the city and gives the city of Zürich the opportunity to finally prove itself as a “city of solidarity” and be what it likes to pretend to be. We hope that the city will finally realise its responsibility and not shift it back to the federal government and cantons.
All people should be free to choose where they want to live: For a world without borders!
