Evacuate NOW – we have space!

On 10 October at 14:30 we will take to the streets in Bern (starting at Bundesplatz) to demand the immediate admission of people from the Moria camp and an end to the inhumane situation at the EU’s external borders!

The situation at Europe’s external borders is escalating. The Moria refugee camp – the shame of Europe – burned down completely on 9 September. The people were not helped after the fire. Instead, the refugees had to hold out on the streets for days. Police and right-wing extremist groups blocked access to the cities. Volunteers who wanted to bring food and water to the refugees were stopped by the police. Using tear gas, the people were finally forced into a new camp. A camp that is fenced in with Nato barbed wire and guarded by police and military. In unstable tents set up on an old military site, dangerously close to the water. The ground is contaminated with munitions. We must not allow people to be treated like this. Never! Never again!

The catastrophic conditions at Europe’s external borders have been known for months and years. Human rights organisations have long been calling for an end to Europe’s life-threatening isolationist policy. Swiss civil society (over 50,000 signatures), 132 organisations and various cities and municipalities also called on the Federal Council to evacuate the Greek camps immediately back in the spring. However, instead of evacuating the people, the employees of the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit are helping to build the new camp. Switzerland is investing taxpayers’ money in the construction of a detention centre.

We will take to the streets on 10 October 2020 at 14:30 in Bern (starting at Bundesplatz) and show that we do not agree with this. We are calling loudly on the Federal Council to take in refugees now. We demand a migration policy that protects the dignity and rights of all people. We have more than enough space – we have the resources – and we have the responsibility to act now!

“Say it loud, say it clear – Refugees are welcome here”
